Shoebox-ide is a deprecated IDE program that Shoebot had initially. Now,
on GNU/Linux at least, the "proper" way to edit Shoebot files
graphically is through a Gedit plugin, providing simple shortcuts for
running Shoebot scripts.

I haven't touched the Gedit for OSX package, but I'd dare to guess that
it would be a matter of putting the plugin inside the right folder
inside the Gedit application bundle.

It's complaining because Cairo is a dependency, and without it Shoebot
can't run. In order to install it, you need a way to install *nix
programs and libraries like Cairo. The most popular choice appears to be
MacPorts (a nice GUI for it is available at
http://trac.macports.org/wiki/MacPortsGUI).

In the earlier days of Shoebot, I managed to get it working (well, only
through the commandline, no graphical editor) by installing the
dependencies via MacPorts, but there's quite a few of them. I'd be happy
to pop over IRC to help or work on an OSX installation page
collaboratively -- would be great to have more content on the Shoebot
wiki from actual use.

Shoebot - beziereditor example

Hi,
I've added some recent changes and the bezier editor example from nodebox now works, so this has been added to the repository.
The main thing added is some nodebox compatibility - you can import nodebox.graphics for instance and it wraps the relevant shoebot functions.

I've also pushed some changes that were languishing on my drive to separate grammar from other stuff.

Not sure how much free time I'll get this time, but hopefully will be more to come..

Problem pushing to shoebot gitorious (return code 22)

I tried pushing to the gitorious repository just now and got an error:

with specific meanings? do you have a naming policy?

- is there a difference between how you approach large features that
may take months to accomplish?

- is there any review process? if so, how do you accomplish that?

- what is your deployment method and frequency?

- are there any permissions or acls in place? how are they enforced?

- is there any ticketing system integration? how do you know what to
work on next or status of existing issues?

- are there build systems or any other system coupled to or triggered
from your version control? documentation builds, notifications, etc.

- do you use any helping scripts or wrappers? if so, how do you
distribute them to your team members?

- do you have any training procedures in place for new hires? how do
they get familiar with your workflow and policies?

- do you have a tagging policy?

7. What issues do your developers new to Git tend to have the most?

8. Do you have sub-projects (libraries or shared code kept as a
separate repository inside your main repository)? If so, how do you
handle them? Submodules?

9. Are there any tools used, such as IDEs with Git integration, GUIs
or libraries that interface with Git?

10. What is the Open Source policy at your company? Do you host or
work on OS projects? Are they used in your commercial product?

11. Are there any changes in your workflow practices since you first
adopted Git? ie: is there something you tried doing using Git that you
have since changed or abandoned because it didn't work well?

font styles missing

hi all,

i updated my shoebot installation to the gitourious one
(https://gitorious.org/shoebot/shoebot) and found that font styles are
not working anymore.

it seems that the code parts which are responsible for this in
typography.py are missing, although in the old repository it's there.

are there any reason for this? doesn't gitorious hold the latest version
of the code?

text vs. oval bug

i might have encountered a bug. when i display text and draw an oval,
they are connected with a line. i'm using the latest git version. tested
in osx and ubuntu.

This is odd, I just tested it and it seems to work for meTM.

I tried an existing animated bot, running with Ctrl-R and from the menu, then
tried a new one that drew a rect and that was ok too..

Clipping working - now can we release?

OK .. maybe want a little testing first I guess.

It took a while as I had some sort of mental block about how it worked in cairo
(simple, just like stroke), and also preventing me from understanding it in
sb/nb (simple, just pass in the path to clip to) .. not sure why I had so much
trouble but there you go.

+ The explanation I should've put in the bug report about how to add it (or
anything)(if I hadn't had said mental block).

The drawqueue is just a load of functions that get passed a cairo context -
you create a function, something like render_closure, that returns a render()
function... this gets called later when rendering happens... see ClippingPath ..
really not much in it at all.

Seeing the old shoebot implementation, and actually reading cairo and nodebox
docs was all that was needed all along ;)

Anyway.. .point is - clipping seems to be working ...

RPythonic comes with CTypes bindings for opencv, I wonder if these could be used
instead of the Swig ones we have now?

C Modules, Cython and debian packaging?

I experimented converting the supershape C module to Cython and it seems to
work, would this be any easier to package for debian than using the compiled C
modules?

(It builds from setup.py in supershapes folder)

Debian packaging is mostly there

After much headscratching, we can now make debian packages by typing
'make builddeb' :-) Changes have been pushed to Gitorious.

Some notes:
- I've excluded the sbopencv library (see http://bugs.shoebot.net/issue9)
- I've also excluded the colors/aggregated dir, which has thousands of
files which bloat up the filesize

Still missing:
- Properly mark version as 0.4a4, and update the changelog -- this is
giving me errors about 'unrepresentable changes to source'.
- Package Gedit plugin

New bug tracker for Shoebot

I've pretty much given up on Trac -- hard to configure and maintain. I
had been looking for alternative trackers and tried to set up Roundup,
which is a Python-based tracker used by the Python project and some
others like Tcl/Tk.

You just have to quickly register and you're set. It's really simple and
great for a small project like Shoebot, without all the extra
unnecessary features and overhead of Trac.

I also began skinning it (the default theme is fugly), as well as
changing some of the interface messages and removing unneeded features.
Let me know if there's anything that looks off.

I've already included a few of the bugs reported here on the list,
please assign the ones you can take care of to yourself. The Goto10
servers are working intermittently -- I want to copy the old bug list
over when they're up.

Good work with the python3 fixes, will it still work in python2.x, if so I'll
just apply them. We need to think about gtk3 as PyGtk is going away to be

Placement from center

The two transform modes we have are well and good, but it would be really useful
to have a placement mode that works like opengl, centered around the current
position.

This would mean that the following would place a large circle, with a small
circle centered on it:

fill(0.4)
ellipse(0, 0, 100, 100)
fill(0, 0, 0.4)
ellipse(0, 0, 50, 50)

I'd propose one of these to activate it:

placement(mode=CENTER)
transform(placement=CENTER)

Make sense ?
(Maybe I'm missing something here, but drawing from the center seems a bit
tricky right now)

Maybe I should make a new shoebot grammar to add the placement command though as
it's not strictly nodebox any more.

osx install

hi all,

i'm trying to install shoebot on osx 10.5 following the descriptions on
http://shoebot.net/download/

i had to use the following instead of the pycairo and python-gtk2
macports packages mentioned on the page.
sudo port install py-cairo py-gtk2

install works fine, although py-cairo is installed for macports
python2.4, so i had to change the first line of sbot and shoebot-ide to
#!/opt/local/bin/python2.4
from
#!/System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.5/Resources/Python.app/Contents/MacOS/Python

but when i try to run sbot from the command line it hangs up. it seems
it does it while importing gtk. is anyone using shoebot in osx?

any help would be appreciated.

clipping paths

i've made an attempt at implementing clipping paths.
it's working more or less, and actually i'm rather proud of it, as it
was a bit an pain to work out, but i'm afraid there are still some
things not behaving as expected related to alpha values of mask.
i think i need help to fix it. (and maybe there are conceptual errors in
my implementation too)

Note on progress

Hi guys,

I'm totally psyched by the recent activity on the list. You all rock :-)

A note on my absentness -- right now i'm preparing for my first lecture
tomorrow at Porto Fine Arts, where i'll be teaching computer design
strategies to communication design students. Needless to say that
Shoebot/Nodebox will be the central part to the subject. I'm still
drafting up the curriculum and will publish it later on.

This means that i'll finally be back into serious activity on Shoebot.
My focus would now be to fine-tune the front-end (Gedit plugin) and pay
more attention to usability and ease-of-use, which is a detail that has
not been a priority so far. Also, i'm redoing the website contents to
deal with obsolete information there. Finally, i'll be producing
documentation to support my classes, and later adapt it into a proper
reference for Shoebot.

Also, Stu -- many thanks for the thorough documentation on shoebot-dq
changes, this is immensely helpful. I've been dabbling with PyUnit and
will churn out some tests in order to pin down the remaining
inconsistencies between 0.3 and 0.4. But i'm very, very excited to see
0.4 stable :-)

Typography Rendering

I've fixed the issue on the font rendering, it now selects any font
installed on the system and accepts any option that pango and freetype
recognizes, and measures textwidth and textheight.
I had to pre-render text at each test metrics call.

I have my current implementation at

Shoebot DQ documentation

rational (+ changing the rendering system spawned quite a lot of changes).

Added this from nodebox-gl to main and my branch.

You do

from shoebot.data import geo

instead of

from nodebox.geo import geo

The attached nebula example works albeit very slowly.

I wonder if in future we can use import hooks to make make imports from the
nodebox namespace work ?

It also shows up a couple of bugs

In 0.3:
bots without a draw() function will redraw continously.

And in dq branch...
The colours look weird, very strange.

In the help it says -a (variables) implies -w (window mode).
I guess we should actually make -a run things in window mode?

I've done this in my branch, it probably makes sense for the
main one ?
