I'm pretty sure this was spam as it was an exact resend of a message from a few years ago... however we do need to have this discussion.

We might need start the to move to Gtk3 at the same time, as there aren't Gtk2 bindings for python 3 IIRC.

I recommend starting an a branch that uses PyGI and Gtk 3 - just file output would be enough (just comment out any Gui stuff that doesn't work).

Using pygtk_compat would probably be enough to get things working initially.

Although porting with pygi-convert.sh would be more desireable in the longer term.

Once that minimal version is working, then branch off that for the Python 3 version - use 2to3, to create the initial version.

It's not super useful yet, (although it has already reminded me that the examples expect their images and media to be in inconsistant directories).

If you do anything in these directions then post it to the list + I can use it to evolve the testing tool into something useful.

Good work with the python3 fixes, will it still work in python2.x, if so I'll
just apply them. We need to think about gtk3 as PyGtk is going away to be
replaced with PyGObject. I'm a bit for a little bit, but will apply any fixes.

Yes, that's an issue that pops up with Roundup (the bug tracking
software). I couldn't pin down the reason, but found reloading does the
trick.

For the moment it will only work on gedit 2.x, 3.x changed the way the plugins work.

I've had a brief look and it doesn't look like too much work to make a gedit 3.x compatible plugin.

It's complaining because Cairo is a dependency, and without it Shoebot can't run. In order to install it, you need a way to install *nix programs and libraries like Cairo. The most popular choice appears to be MacPorts (a nice GUI for it is available at http://trac.macports.org/wiki/MacPortsGUI).

In the earlier days of Shoebot, I managed to get it working (well, only through the commandline, no graphical editor) by installing the dependencies via MacPorts, but there's quite a few of them. I'd be happy to pop over IRC to help or work on an OSX installation page collaboratively -- would be great to have more content on the Shoebot wiki from actual use.

Shoebot - beziereditor example

Hi,
I've added some recent changes and the bezier editor example from nodebox now works, so this has been added to the repository.
The main thing added is some nodebox compatibility - you can import nodebox.graphics for instance and it wraps the relevant shoebot functions.

I've also pushed some changes that were languishing on my drive to separate grammar from other stuff.

Not sure how much free time I'll get this time, but hopefully will be more to come..

- are there any permissions or acls in place? how are they enforced?

- are there build systems or any other system coupled to or triggered
from your version control? documentation builds, notifications, etc.

- do you use any helping scripts or wrappers? if so, how do you

- do you have any training procedures in place for new hires? how do

- do you have a tagging policy?

7. What issues do your developers new to Git tend to have the most?

8. Do you have sub-projects (libraries or shared code kept as a
separate repository inside your main repository)? If so, how do you
handle them? Submodules?

9. Are there any tools used, such as IDEs with Git integration, GUIs
or libraries that interface with Git?

10. What is the Open Source policy at your company? Do you host or

moving code around for rendering.. . if you can provide simple shoebot code in

i tried to find out the full names of the available fonts using the
following code on osx.

import cairo
import pango
import pangocairo

font_map = pangocairo.cairo_font_map_get_default()
families = font_map.list_families()
for font in families:
print font.get_name(), ':',
for face in font.list_faces():
print face.get_face_name(), ',',
print

for arial it prints:
Arial : Bold Italic, Bold, Italic, Regular

these work:

font('Arial')
font('Arial Regular')
font('Arial Bold')

but

font('Arial Italic')
font('Arial Bold Italic')

do not make the text italic, although they display regular or bold faces.

thanks. as a workaround i used
beginpath()
endpath()
before the oval(), which seems to eliminate the problem for now.

You need to use the full name of the font, font("Arial Italic") works
good for me, please verify, as Ubuntu does not have the true Arial
fonts, instead it bundles a set of different fonts aliased to them.

I disabled the style and the "manual parser" of the font options in
favour of a Pango solution, as it failed in lots of cases. If you
want, please publish your modifications or send a patch and I'll
review them for merger into the trunk.

thanks for your help. i meant italic, bold, etc.. i tried your example
and it sometimes work, but not always. i can use font('Arial Bold'), but
not font('Arial Italic'). when using the modifications of the linked
source code from a previous shoebot version these styles could be passed
to text with the 'style' keyword and it set the pango font style, which
worked perfectly.

What do you mean by "font styles"?

For example, you can use and specify the full name of the font, for
example font('Arial Italic Bold') or font("Univers 66 Bold Italic")

text vs. oval bug

hi all,

i might have encountered a bug. when i display text and draw an oval,
they are connected with a line. i'm using the latest git version. tested
in osx and ubuntu.

stroke(0)
oval(300, 300, 50, 50)

any help would be appreciated.

font styles missing

hi all,

i updated my shoebot installation to the gitourious one
(https://gitorious.org/shoebot/shoebot) and found that font styles are
not working anymore.

it seems that the code parts which are responsible for this in
typography.py are missing, although in the old repository it's there.
(https://code.goto10.org/hg/index.cgi/shoebot/file/2c9696d6e76a/shoebot/data/typography.py)

are there any reason for this? doesn't gitorious hold the latest version
of the code?

This is odd, I just tested it and it seems to work for meTM.

I tried an existing animated bot, running with Ctrl-R and from the menu, then
tried a new one that drew a rect and that was ok too..

Ah, there is an issue here - when you click save it actually tells it to do
a save on the next render, but if it's not animated then it won't save
(I think).

Next time I take rendering apart I've got an idea how to fix this ;)

I'm working with the dev version, and have to say this is totally
awesome work :-)

I see a lot of fixed stuff, e.g. textpath works like Nodebox now! And
wow, Shoebot is *fast* now :-D

I found a couple of issues though: for some reason the Gedit plugin
doesn't load the script when I do "Run script". It will do for today's
presentation at the Montréal Python user group, but I'll try and debug
this asap, it's quite the blocker.

Save as SVG from the GTK window is not working either. I'll look into
this as well. Outputting SVG through the commandline is working fine
though.

For now I'll just file bug reports.

It took a while as I had some sort of mental block about how it worked in cairo
(simple, just like stroke), and also preventing me from understanding it in
sb/nb (simple, just pass in the path to clip to) .. not sure why I had so much
trouble but there you go.

anything)(if I hadn't had said mental block).

The drawqueue is just a load of functions that get passed a cairo context -
you create a function, something like render_closure, that returns a render()
function... this gets called later when rendering happens... see ClippingPath ..

docs was all that was needed all along ;)

Anyway.. .point is - clipping seems to be working ...

instead of the Swig ones we have now?

It's just supershape thats built like that (look at the top of __init__.py to
see the change).

It's quite nice using pyximport - setup.py is not needed, it just compiles it on
the first go.

What I haven't done is any benchmarking, I'm v.new to cython and probably not
using
it correctly (the generated code seems to have a lot of checks in it (using
cython -a))

Still, if it's faster and more convenient, it might be a nice compromise.

Cool, I'll try and put this up somewhere when I get time (I guess I'll need to
setup a new git branch or something.

I really think when it comes to libraries, we should maybe seperate them out and
have a setup.py for each,
so they can all be separately packaged in pypi (we'd want upstream agreement so
this was maintained properly).

Also: I had a quick look, and it seems pyximport might even do the compilation
on demand.

C Modules, Cython and debian packaging?

work, would this be any easier to package for debian than using the compiled C
modules?
